Free Crochet Pattern - Boy's Springtime Vest

Difficulty: Easy
Size(s): Child Size 2-4. Vest fits 20” chest and hips and 13” from shoulder to waist. Finished garment measures 22” in chest and 15” from shoulder seam to bottom. See .pdf links above for downloads of alternate sizes.
Yarn(s): Lion Brand Baby Soft, Light (3), 1-5 oz. skeins, (shown in Pastel Blue #106)
Hook(s): I/9 Hook or to obtain gauge
Other: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge: 20 sc = 5” (12.7 cm); 20 rows = 4” (10.2 cm)
Stitches Used: Single crochet, single crochet in back loop only, single crochet two together (insert hook in first stitch, yarn over and pull through, insert hook in second stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook), double crochet, slip stitch
Pattern Abbreviations: Chain (ch), stitch(es) (st(s)), single crochet (sc), back loop only (blo), slip stitch (sl st), repeat (rep), round(s) (rnd(s)), single crochet two together (sc2tog)
1. Ch 8. Sc in second ch from hook and each remaining ch across. (6 sc)
2. Ch 1. Turn. Sc in first sc. Sc in blo in each rem sc. (6 sc)
3. Rep row 2 for 86 more rows. (88 rows of 6 sc)
Sl st two short edges together.
Body:
Rotate to work across the long edge. The body is worked in rounds. Do not turn after each round. The outside will be the wrong side.
1. Ch 1. Work 88 sc across. Sl st in first sc to join. (88 sc)
2. Ch 1. Sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. (88 sc)
3. Repeat rnd 2 for 38 more rnds. (40 rnds of 88 sc)
1. Sl st in first 4 sts. Ch 1. Sc in next 36 sts. Leave remaining sts unworked. (36 sc)
2. Ch 1. Turn. Sc to end of row. (36 sc)
3. Rep row 2 for 18 more rows. (20 rows of 36 sc)
21. Ch 1. Turn. Sc in next 8 sts. Sl st in next 20 sts (for the neck opening). Ch 1. SC in remaining sts. (8 sc)
22. Ch 1. Turn. Sc in each of the 8 sc. (8 sc)
23. Rep row 22 for 3 more rows. (5 rows of 8 sc)
26. Turn. Sl st in each sc. Fasten off.
Back Top (Left):
Join yarn in sc to left of the 20 sl st for the neck opening.

Finishing:
Line up front and back pieces and sl st shoulder seams together. Join yarn at bottom left of front neck opening and dc around to bottom right corner of neck opening. Join with sl st to second sc to left of bottom right corner. Slip stitch first 8 dc on left and right front sides together. Sl st around arm openings. Weave in all ends.
